In 1952, Gaby Aghion opened a French fashion house designed to give women clothing that was luxurious but not as restricting or formal as current Haute Couture collections. By using fine materials and designing casual pieces, Aghion is credited as having discovered the Pret-a-Porter market. Fashion icons including Grace Kelly, Brigitte Bardot, and Jackie Kennedy were all fans of Chloe, and today the brand continues to enjoy major support from Chloe Sevigny, Rachel Bilson, and Kirsten Dunst. The brand also helped launch the career of Karl Lagerfeld, who acted as the main designer from 1966 to 1978, and then again from 1992 to 1997, and later Stella McCartney, Phoebe Philo, and Hanna MacGibbon brought their direction to the label. Today, helmed by Clare Waight Keller, Chloe continues to create luxurious daywear fit for the bohemian cool set and young women eager for effortlessly-feminine clothing.
