Charlie May - the story of a girl à la mode

After shooting the Chlorophilia editorials featuring Charlie May garments, I wanted to learn more about the woman behind those wonderful creations.

1/ You've launched your brand in 2011 after creating a fashion blog called Girl à la mode, how did this adventure start?

I started Girl à la Mode when I was studying fashion design at university. I always wanted to have my own label, the blog kind of started out as a hobby, something to do in my spare time. It started getting attention quite early on and now it's my source of income, using it to find my label Charlie May.

2/ The fashion brand Charlie May has a very clean, minimalistic and avant-garde aesthetics, how do you describe your own label? who is the 'Charlie May' woman?

I guess I am the Charlie May woman. I design pieces that I would wear myself, or that I can see my friends wearing. Maybe it's even the ideal version of me, the cool woman I would like to be.
I love this strong confident look, when someone feels confident in what they are wearing, it shows and that's the look I want to go for.

​3/ ​What are you main inspirations? do you feel inspired by the same kind of things through your blog and brand?

I am always inspired by where I grew up, in North Devon, England. It's by the sea and surrounded by countryside, the rugged landscape is jaw droppingly beautiful. Whenever fashion month is done and all sales are finalized, I go back to visit my family and get inspired again.

4/ Social networks such as facebook, instagram and tumblr are so influential nowadays, what do you think of this new era? how do you communicate with your customers, fans and followers?

Instagram is hands down the most important network there is right now. Even more important than my blog, even though there aren't clickable links yet I can make sales and gain an audience that eventually will turn into a customer base. It's quite amazing really. I am obsessed with it myself, being able to keep up to date with everyone all over the world. It's a very exciting time we are living in.

5/ You are designing clothes for women, would you be interested in making menswear collections? why did you make this choice?

Menswear is definitely on the cards. I think it's important if I want to create a Charlie May world, to offer everything. I would love to do shoes, bags, and one day homeware too! I do get a lot of men enquiring when this will be though, but I think its a few years down the line.

6/ London womenswear fashion week is coming soon, can you talk about your next collection? what is it about?

Yes, the new collection is going to be a new step for me, kind of my journey into color exploration and specifically what it means to me, as well as introducing denim too.

7/ Since its launch, the brand has been more and more successful, what are the next projects you are working on? how do you feel today as a designer?

Thank you! I feel very excited, the team is growing, it's no longer just me (!) and the collections are coming on well, each one seems more and more full, if you know what I mean. We're starting to create a great brand signature as well as some exciting collaborations happening too. Watch this space I suppose :)
